Swindon funk combo Style X and their underground Brit-Funk classic ‘No Secret Affair’ remixed from the original 9-minute session tapes for this double-A sided 12”, featuring back-to-back versions from Sean P. and GE-OLOGY.

“Recently mentioned as a white label, this very well played and arranged cheerfully bounding brassy fast 137-139 bpm 12in jazz instrumental has an infectious drive and good sense of dynamics”
(James Hamilton, Record Mirror, 1981)

Style X were a nine piece band comprised of local Swindon jazz musicians and former Cloud members, including bassist Mike Barrington, and drummer Paul Holmes. Their one and only single ‘No Secret Affair’ was the debut release for Rygel Records, a label formed in 1981 by producer Alan Osborne of Flashback Records shop, Swindon’s major hub for the local jazz-funk scene, supplying DJ’s and punters the latest US dance imports across the West Country.

Originally released as a vocal/instrumental 12" fading out at around 5-minutes per side, these new versions forty years later showcase the entire 9-minute session with instrumentation previously unheard until now.

“It went into the Luxembourg Disco Charts at Number 53 and is on song for cracking the Top Thirty ... It boasts chunky funky dance rhythms, with Phil Welton’s subtly applied keyboards filling the gaps ... with the hot and heady horn section of brothers Ian (trombone), Jim (trumpet) and Alan (sax) Bateman swapping licks over the steamy insistent rhythms ... It’s cool and silky, romping along in a tasteful Crusaders groove, sneeringly defying the term “local band”. Style X and Rygel have started in Style.”
(Swindon Advertiser, 1981)
